Our customers and fans are some of the biggest cause-related organizations in the world—and we love making them more effective at what they do.

Our tight-knit team works out of Tribeca in New York City. We offer full benefits, competitive salaries, stock options, and an intense yet relaxed work environment. See our current openings below. Resumes and cover letters should be sent to jobs {at} mcommons(.)com.

  • Strong Developers that can move up and down the technology stack with ease
  • An interest in test driven development
  • Aggressive development and refactoring
The laundry list:

Ruby, Rails, MySQL, Git, AJAX, Asterisk, VoiceXML, ActionScript/Flash

Why join us?
  • We’re Product and Engineering-centric: we practice test-driven development, pair programming, rapid refactoring, and continuous deployment. If you’re looking to be stimulated and deal with hard problems, smart people, and no bureaucracy, look no further.
  • We’re Good and Improving: we do daily stand-ups, programmers are first class citizens, and we’re building a real company with a great culture. We bring in interesting speakers, we share office space with other great startups and agile experts, we eat together and we drink together. Systems Engineer

We are looking for a Lead Systems Engineer to manage our production Linux cluster and constantly improve system reliability. Our applications depend on high availability (we run mobile messaging for concerts & rallies with 10,000s of people and process millions of messages) and experience large volumes spikes (say, 0-1,000 simultaneous phone calls in 60 seconds). This requires solid system engineering, operations, and monitoring. We also rely on a number of third party services, any of which could be down at any time. We maintain sensitive data for large, non-profit organizations, so security is of utmost importance. You will be responsible for all aspects of our platform that affect speed, reliability, security, and overall system performance. Experience managing a production Linux (CentOS) environment is a must. You should have experience troubleshooting, diagnosing, and improving network traffic, CPU utilization, databases (MySQL), and applications. You will also be responsible for system monitoring and alerting, backups, and machine clustering/replication. Familiarity with Rails (specifically nginx & Mongrel) is preferred. Finally, as we are a startup, you will also be expected to wear different hats, including taking initiative on automating much of our regression testing and reporting.

User Experience Designers

Mobile Commons is currently pushing the envelope on mobile interaction design by creating a tool-kit for our customers to build their own mobile applications that are accessible from any phone. If you’re interested in new challenges beyond web-based interaction design, we want to hear from you. You will be directly tasked with working on both the application building tools as well as understanding the interactions that can be built on top of the Mobile Commons infrastructure—and that means that you’ll have the opportunity to greatly influence future product direction and development.

You:

You’ve created software products before, preferably on the web. You love thinking about how to make things simple for people, the difference between business and consumer applications, and putting in those little, beautiful touches that make someone truly love a product. In addition to thinking about design, you’ll have some experience with a good portion of the following: heuristic evaluation, pruning/refactoring, GOMS modeling, small-screen design, communication design, and getting your hands good and dirty with low/hi-fi prototyping.

Interns

Mobile Commons is changing the way that people use phones by bringing together the power of the mobile universe with the web. We work with many amazing customers and are looking for:

  • Computer Science/Engineering Interns
  • Data Crunching Interns
  • Graphic Design Interns
  • Marketing Interns
You:

We’re looking for exceptional interns that are interested in working in a fast moving environment, taking on real responsibility, and watching how a company is built. This is not a boring investment bank opportunity.

Computer Science Interns: Interested in working with web applications and mobile? Want to see what its like to use a dynamic language in a production environment? Want your code to have a real impact? Great. We’re looking for interns that want to get their hands dirty writing tests, doing some AI modeling, and writing great software.

Data Crunching Interns: Are you studying math, statistics, or economics? We’re looking for interns that love pulling interesting information out of data and like the prospect of doing regressions on causes that people care about. We’re particularly interested in people that have facility with data and visual displays of quantitative information (think Tufte).

Graphic Design Interns: Are you interested in helping build a brand that’s already appeared in Fast Company, the New Yorker, the WSJ, and the NY Times? Are you curious about the overlap between print, online media, and mobile media? We’re looking for graphic design interns that are multi-talented and looking to bring all of that to an internship. Special bonuses for illustrators and animators.

Marketing Interns: Interested in building a brand that connects people to things they actually care about? Mobile Commons can use your help. Our approach to marketing is highly analytic and deeply tied into product development. We’re mainly interested in MBA candidates, but won’t overlook talented undergraduates.

Us:

We’re an exciting startup in NYC building an amazing communications platform that brings together the power of text messaging, phone calls, the web, and the mobile web. We’re about a year old, angel backed, profitable, and have a high-profile client list. Our office environment is fast-paced, open and unbureaucratic. Programmers work with sales & marketing, designers work with support, and everyone gets insight into all aspects of the company.
